I'm older!

Oddly enough, I'm quite content being 27--and not just because I've been telling people I'm 27 for the last year. I've decided it's the perfect age--old enough to be taken seriously and to have established solid credibility, but young enough to still have limitless potential and energy. So, in honor of my reaching the age of perfection, allow me to elaborate on my young and old dichotomy discovery for those less age-fortunate (especially since I will only be so lucky for one year, and after that, my memory will surely start to fail).

1. Old: Owning a house.
2. Young: Buying a house in the city.
3. Old: Being married for three years.
4. Young: Getting called a "newlywed" by a seventy-year-old man.
5. Old: Getting hit on by the same seventy-year-old-man.
6. Young: Not being flattered by such advances, despite his regular gym attendance.
7. Old: Owning six major appliances.
8. Young: Never using more than three on any given day.
9. Old: Enjoying chatting it up with professors.
10. Young: Counting the years it would take me to become a true colleague.
11. Old: Having a lawn mower.
12. Young: Buying a push-mower. (Not to be confused with a gas-powered lawnmower. No, I power this beast.)
13. Old: Having a lawn to mow.
14. Young: Only mowing it when I get sick of people stopping by the house to ask if they can mow it.
15. Old: Starting school this fall for the twentieth time.
16. Young: Realizing I'll have six to thirty more (since PhDs take anywhere from five to twenty-nine years, right?).
17. Old: Composting.
18. Young: Suddenly composting is trendy--what luck!
19. Old: Having boxes of business cards.
20. Young: Not knowing how to use so many of those cards.
21. Old: Not getting Twitter.
22. Young: Loving facebook.
23. Old: Buying my own birthday present--a ticket to Europe.
24. Young: Being giddy at the thought of seeing Ben again.
25. Old: Thinking I should have twenty-seven examples if I'm turning twenty-seven.
26. Young: Still lacking complete discipline.

  1. So I may be a little late in saying this, but I hope you had a most fabulous birthday! Now your post has me all confused whether to think you are really old or not...

  3. Susan, I finally stalked you down, and happy late birthday! It's fun to see what you're doing, and I hope someday I'll see you again in person. Take care!

  4. I turned 27 this summer too. Instead of home/appliance ownership, my kids are keeping me old...but the idea that I'll be an empty nester in my early 40s is keeping me young. Happy birthday!

  5. Yes, Rachel. But of course.

Welcome to the wonderful world of 27, Ginger! I had no idea we were the same age. Does this mean that if I have my kids in my early 40s I can send them your way? :)
