Aren't my berries so patriotic?
I realize I could be somewhat biased because they are products of our sweat and labor and countless mosquito bites, but these were hands down the best strawberries I've ever tasted. I've had other fresh ones before, but these Honeoye strawberries are really something else.
The description:
"Honeoye isn’t just sweet, and firm, and juicy, it sings with so much flavor it makes you smack your lips. Honeoye is also winter hardy and rated No. 1 in a state test against berry rot. Very vigorous grower, heavy producer of conical glossy berries of average firmness. Super!"
They were firm when I first bit into them, but then they exploded in a sun-warmed, blissfully-sweet symphony in my mouth. Luckily there are dozens more to come.
This was the lone ripe blueberry thanks to the birds who were snacking on our not-quite-ripe blueberries up until we put up the bird block. It was also rather delicious but I mostly appreciated it patriotically.
And now, let this be a reminder of why we have this fabulous holiday:
You should be a food columnist - I am about to buy a ticket and fly out there just to try one of those strawberries. Delish...
